Sri Lanka has experienced heavy rains that have caused sever flooding that has displaced over 1 million people. Many are being housed in 505 welfare centers. Disaster Management Officials have stated that 7 are dead, but 5 navy personnel that were deployed on relief work are also missing. Furthermore, almost 1,000 houses have been destroyed already, and towns like Medirigirya were completely submerged in water. Some rescue attempts have also lead to fatalities because the flood waters are capable of lifting and smashing rescue boats. Relief efforts are accelerating, as stated by Sri Lanka's ministry of disaster management.
