According to a U.S. official, the transitional Somali parliament has extended their terms for 3 years without public consultation. The government is amidst battle with Islamist insurgents over control of territories with Somalia. The nation has not had an effective government in over two decades.
This past week, their terms were extended because of the upcoming expiration of their terms in August. Although many nations urged Somalia to consult with other nations, they did not and extended their terms without knowledge of the international community. Nations were expecting a new constitution to be written and a general election to be held before the deadline in August. Nations are now asking the government to reconsider the choice that they have made, saying the decision was made out of haste. Unfortunately for Somalia, but fortunately for other nations, the UN has condemned the actions that were taken this past week.
Meetings are scheduled for the upcoming weeks to talk with officials concerning the state of Somalia's government and the safety of the people. Many expect peace to come out of the upcoming meetings.
