The President of the Republic of Congo, along with a number of other heads of states from other African countries got together this week to discuss illegal poaching of elephant tusks. The President of the Republic of Congo actually burned a number of confiscated illegally poached ivory tusks in a symbolic bonfire.

This meeting is turning a corner for wildlife and what it means for protecting wildlife. Conservationists around the world are now more hopeful that Africa will be working harder to protect endangered species.

The action plan developed at this meeting will be presented at meeting will be presented at the African Union summit meeting this June. The Republic of Congo is calling for the global community to come together on the issue, as the issue does not belong to Africa alone. And at the rapid rates our endangered species are declining, our world cannot afford to let Africa fight this issue alone.
