Washington Post. The Kurds are looking for independence from the Iraqi State and will be voting next week, there are those that oppose the independence vote such as the U.S. and Iraqi rivals. This is the first step in receiving their independence and will take a long time to achieve. Others in the area are worried about their own Kurdish population rising up for independence in their own countries. After the Gulf War the U.S. helped to set up the Kurdish government in Northern Iraq. The United Nations has also opposed the referendum for the vote to begin independence whic hcould dissolve Iraq as a country.
