The Secret of Angela Merkel’s Longevity: Strategic Flip-Flops

I found this article to be interesting because it offered a perspective on the German political system that I was unaware of. Chancellor Merkel's strategy of flip flopping on issues has kept her in power for 12 years, something that would not be able to happen in American politics. If Donald Trump flipped on issues over and over again, the American people would become sick of it and most likely would vote him out of office the next election, but this has been a key element of Ms. Merkel's reign as chancellor. She is projected to win the election this weekend, but if she lost I think there would have to be an interesting dynamic change between the United States and Germany. In terms of democratic peace, the article mentions how the Chancellor understands that an alliance with the US is beneficial to Germany, with her stating, “Germany and America are connected by values of democracy, freedom, and respect for the law and the dignity of man, independent of origin, skin color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or political views,” after the 2016 US election. As democracies, there will not be any war here soon.
