Putin tried to smash the opposition. Instead protests have spiraled

Russian protestors are rising and becoming a problem in the eyes of president Putin. Over 50,000 people rallied last week calling for fair local elections. These protests were lead by familiar faces in the Russian Protesting scene: Alexei Navany and Lyubov Sobol. These protests are int he wake of upcoming election on September 8th and are trying to bring to light the political repression being exerted by local authorities. Russian riot police are beginning to get violent with these protesters and president Putin eventually responded to these events saying, "Neither the authorities nor any groups of citizens have the right to violate the law and carry the situation to the point of absurdity or cause scuffles with the authorities... This is against the law, and all who committed these violations have to be held accountable under the Russian law."
