No decision from U.N. meeting on North Korea

By: Caroline Cristman

An emergency UN meeting was held to discuss the North Korean missile launch and decide what subsequent actions best fit the believed policy violation. President Obama reacted to the troubling situation by seeking a united response against the country's distressing launch which demonstrated a potential capability for long-range missiles. While the rocket is claimed to have landed in the Pacific Ocean, officials view the launch as a distressing display of potential power, as well as an unwarranted attack on international peace. Issues with discussing potential punishments for the country lie within opposition from Russia and China against our stance on the supposedly clear policy violation. Discussed reasons for why North Korea experimented with the missile stem from obtaining dangerous, long-range missile capabilities to using this demonstration as ways of obtaining international aid for the poor country.
