Egypt's parliament extended the nation's emergency law today, which will not stop police from arresting opposition leaders and democracy activists. The government wants to stress the importance that the law would only cover terrorism, and drug-related crimes, while others oppose the system that is easily manipulated and gives police power against political opponents. Many believe the new law is an attempt by the ruling party to further weaken the opposition of the 2011 presidential elections. This two-year expansion which was passed by a wide majority, was claimed to be needed to counter terrorism. The minister of state for legal and parliamentary affairs suggested that bloggers and activists for non-terror-related crimes will be reviewed, the law will also prohibit security forces from shutting down newspapers and taking property. The Emergency law has allowed authorities to detain suspects for long periods without formal charges, used frequently against members of the Muslim Brotherhood.
