President Karzai annouced at the Munich Security Conference that their security forces will start making a shift from international forces to domestic forces. This shift is planned to start on March 21st and will last for another 3 years as the forces gradually shift to domestic. Karzai said that the influx of 70,000 international troops last year greatly helped the security of his country. Although it was the deadliest year for the U.S. in Afghanistan since the war started, General David Petraeus stated that it has greatly reduced the amount of insurgence, especially in Kabul, and put the terror groups on the defensive. Although the shift is occurring, Karzai does not want to completely cut ties with international forces giving them aid and U.S. and NATO troops will probably still be a presence there long after the shift has stopped.
