China, Pursuing Strategic Interests, Builds Presence in Antarctica


China has increased spending on research and building in the Antarctic. China has chosen a fifth site for a new and upcoming research center. There have been many speculations regarding the driving force behind China’s expansion in Antarctica. Many claim that without a doubt long-term energy and food supply is a driving force. There is speculation that China is positioning itself in Antarctica in order to take advantage of potential resources when the Antarctic Treaty expires in 2048.
