Salvadoran Woman Released After 7 Years in Prison

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-32480443

Abortion laws are incredibly strict throughout Latin America, but even more so in El Salvador. Women are being jailed for homicide if they have a miscarriage, which is what happened to Carmen Guadalupe Vasquez Aldana, who after being raped at the age of 17 had a miscarriage, and was sentenced to 30 years in jail. She has now been released after serving over 7 years. In 1998, all abortions were outlawed, regardless of health complications or rape. There are doctors that are willing to perform abortions illegally, but they are expensive, can be dangerous and can be done incorrectly on purpose for profit. This law marginalizes women, especially poor women, and exploits them because many are raped in their places of work and have no one they can turn to, and Amnesty International is fighting to change this.
