A Frazzled World Holds Its Breath While the U.S. Chooses Its Leader

Americans are not the only ones with an acute interest in Tuesday's election. After four years of Trump shaking up the way America deals with foreign policy, to the benefit of some and detriment of others, the international community will be watching to see where US policy goes next. Israel and Netanyahu are perhaps Trump's biggest international supporters. Elsewhere there is concern about a Trump victory. Germany is fascinated by the contest, it has covered headlines and resulted in a string of documentaries, one titled "Crazy Trump and the American Catastrophe." Ukrainians are worried that in a close election, Trump may press President Zelensky for a congratulatory message to give legitimacy to a premature claim to victory. But perhaps most invested is China, feeling angst towards both outcomes. Trump has caused anger there over his protectionism but Biden also has ruffled feathers with his stance of "getting tough on China." Both Biden and Trump offer very different paths forward for the way America interacts with the world, and everyone will be watching to see where the nation goes next.
