“Hong Kong Pro-Democracy Politicians Arrested”

7 people associated with the pro-democracy movement in Hong Kong were arrested. Police have charge them with “contempt and interfering with members of the council”. Beijing created a new national security law in June that provoked the conflict between the that group and the pro-Beijing politicians, none of whom have been arrested. The politicians arrest could face up to a year or so in prison for trying to interrupt the chairperson of the Legislative Council. Another person, a teen has been charged with violating the new security law that makes punishing protestors easier. It is argued that it could be used to condemn more people to longer sentences on unjust causes and is a violation of human rights and freedoms. Like I said in the week before, in a time of unrest we are seeing a lot of political instability everywhere because people are realizing the system isn’t working. It will be interesting to see how China continues to respond to incidents like this and pro-democratic protests in Hong Kong. The world is also watching which makes it good in some ways so the Chinese government is limited about what punishments they can dole out without criticism from the rest of the world. I think eventually the protestors will win out and there will be a change in the system. It is important for governments to change with the times and what people want because the government should be for the people. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-china-54768209 Jena Livesay
