Russia has arrested the U.S. journalist Evan Gershkovich while he was on assignment at a city in the Ural Mountains. The reason Russia gave for the arrest was an accusation that Gershkovich was collecting state secrets. He has been formally charged with espionage, which carries a sentence of up to 30 years. The Wall Street Journal has denied these allegations. United States officials are concerned over the targeting of American citizens and the State Department has been in contact with the Russian government over this issue. Warnings for American citizens in Russia have been restated, with suggestions to leave reiterated.
