Israel and terrorist group Hamas have both rebuked a United Nations call for a 14-day diplomatic cease-fire in and around the Gaza Strip, currently in a state of armed conflict. Israel, in indication of the continued rocket barrages on their nation by Hamas, argues that it is "not practical" for such a halt to occur at this time. While Gaza continues its regular rocket attacks on its opponent, Israel air forces and naval artillery continue to regularly bombard the isolated territory as ground troops and armor proceed on land, having assaulted an estimated 50 strategic targets overnight in spite of the UN's call for a halt.
In a press statement following a cabinet meeting, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert announces the intent of their military to continue operations in defense of their nation, declaring “This morning’s rocket fire against residents of the south only proves that the U.N. Security Council Resolution is not practical and will not be honored in actual fact by the Palestinian murder organizations." Likewise, a Hamas representative in Beirut dismissed the resolution on the grounds that it "does not suit us because it is not in the best interest of the Palestinian people."
As the Gaza death toll surpasses 784, including women and children, the Bush Administration, choosing to abstain from the resolution vote, places the responsibility for ending the conflict with Hamas, while simultaneously expressing concern to Olmert about Gaza's humanitarian and civilian mortality issues.
The United Nations has suspended food support after the Israeli destruction of marked transports, and the secretary general calls for an investigation into Israel's alleged firing upon UN and civilian institutions.
