Eleven human rights activists are still missing after several attempts to find their whereabouts by the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC). Forty activists all together have been taken since October. The activists were charged with conspiracy bombing police stations and overthrowing current president, Robert Mugabe. Other activists have claimed being tortured by the Zimbabwean government while in custody. A two-year old child of two of the activists has also been abducted.
This story paints a portrait of the interwoven problems the international community, particularly third world countries. The constant human rights violations and poverty, and the attempts by the oppositional party to solve these issues lead to the violence and corruption within the government. The article "Zimbabwe opposition: Help us find abducted member" connects the escalating economic crisis. According to NPR's website, "it takes 1.2 Quadrillion Zimbabwean dollars to equal $4,000 U.S." The country's inflation rate is the worst in the world at 231million percent. The country is in dire need of basic supplies such as food and fuel. In my opinion the situation is stuck at a stalemate, due to the constant tug of war between the government and the resistance.
