Israel moves to protect its military officers

In an effort to provide a safeguard to its military officers, the government of Israel has passed legislation which would give them legal protection in the case of war crimes charges involving the invasion of Gaza. The government of Israel took these steps in an effort to show their support for their officers, and to maintain that they will protect their officers in the same way the officers have protected the state of Israel.

Justices in Israel are preparing legal defenses and answers to possible questions over these issues, and will defend their assault into Gaza and its execution. There is a concern among government officials that officers may face lawsuits alleging war crimes. United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has ordered an independent investigation into the conduct of Israeli military officials following damage to the U.N. humanitarian compound with white phosphorous shells. The use of this substance is illegal under international law.

These actions by the Israeli government follows a 22 day assault on Gaza, in which more than 1300 Palestinians were killed as well as 13 Israelis. Israel has declared a unilateral ceasefire and pulled troops out on January 21st.
