The Burmese National League of Democracy (NLD) dissolved after failing to register in time for elections. But this wasn't because someone forgot to turn in the papers at the right time, they chose to not register. This was a boycott against the elections. This was a result of the party winning an overwhelming victory in 1990, but never being allowed to govern. Senior NLD Win Tin told BBC that even if the people vote for them, they still cannot win, according to the law and the situation. The election law in Burma does not allow anyone with a criminal record to participate in the elections. This would have forced the NLD to get rid of several key members in order to participate. Registration begins on Friday, and some ex-NLD members are forming a new political party in order to participate in elections. NLD will not come back as a party, but will stay together as a group.
