This past Saturday in Mezhdurechensk, Russia (about 2,000 miles East of Moscow), a gas explosion occurred in Russia's largest coal mine. Four hours later, a second explosion occurred. It is believed that there are twelve dead, and over seventy others remaining trapped. Rescue operations were suspended Sunday, due to smoke limiting visibility inside the mine. The blasts have also disabled the ventilation system in the mine, and rescuers are worried that those trapped will soon run out of air. Officials are blaming the explosions on a partial rock collapse inside the mine. Russian Prime Minister, Dmitry Medvedev, has given federal aid to help out with the disaster.
