Alleged American Spy Sentenced to Death in Iran

Amir Mirzaei Hekmati, a former U.S. marine interpreter, was arrested in Iran while visiting relatives and sentenced to death as a spy for the U.S. CIA. Officials from the State Department as well as the National Security Council have claimed that the allegations are untrue and believe that Hekmati is being held for political reasons. Not coincidentally, the sentence was issued as Iran's nuclear activity is increasing beyond U.N. sanctions and as tighter U.S. led sanctions threaten to undercut the country's oil industry. Hekmati is likely being used to deter actions that may jeopardize their nuclear program and to prevent the U.S. from interfering with their oil industry. He has 20 days from when the verdict was issued to appeal.
