Bahrain government beating activists?

According to a BBC news article I found online, security officers employed by the Bahraini government beat prominent Civil Rights activist Nabeel Rajab. The United States State Department has asked the small island nation in the Middle East to conduct an investigation into the event it denies happened. The United States and Bahrain are close and the US holds their Fifth Fleet there. While the US doesn't usually condemn close allies, they are worried that the government might be cracking down on civil rights activists and not allowing its citizens to express themselves.
