Nepal Government Hoping to Re-Open Mt. Everest to Climbers

After an earthquake in Nepal killed nearly 7,000 people and injured 10,000, an avalanche ravaged climbers on Mt. Everest killing nearly19 of those individuals. The avalanche led to damage on base camps and ladders that help climbers hike. Nepal is hoping to open the mountain back up to climbers by the first week in May for a couple reasons. First, tourism is Nepal's only money making industry and losing the money of climbers (who spend nearly $70,000 on the climbing expedition) could hurt their already damaged economy. Second, with the monsoon season coming up, hikers are determined to finish their already interrupted hike. However, many are questioning why the focus is on opening the mountain, when thousands of Nepal's citizens are struggling to survive. The Nepal government is still deciding whether to open the mountain in the near future. By Hannah Higgins
