The Nobel Prize committee has awarded US President Barack Obama the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009. Upon the announcement of the award, committee head Thorbjoern Jagland came under instant fire from reporters, questioning if the prize was an action of intervention in the politics of the US. Jagland insisted the award was for President Obama's "extraordinary efforts in order to strengthen dialoge in the the world."
