Russia's "Clean" Election Underway

Russia's voting in a parliamentary election has begun and has said to be the "dullest election ever"(Reevell). This comes as a bit of a surprise because the previous election in 2011 sparked mass protests and upheaval, primarily protesting a seemingly rigged election. Putin's United Russia is slated to win by a solid margain as Putin has an 80% approval rating. However, while this election is said to be "cleaner" than previous elections, through one day of voting it's obvious it's nowhere near fairer. Already through one day of voting there are upwards of 1300 complaints of ballot stuffing and general fraud. Putin's opposition also has considerable trouble operating against him. Mostly all the opposition has either been jailed, banned from television, or had their campaigns harassed. Anti-Putin parties were given a bit more room to operate this year, possible as a confidence move by Putin's campaign, but still Russia remains for the most part corrupt.
