According to U.N. officials, it has been claimed that the United States is delaying "tens of millions" of dollars of aid that is sent to Somalia. The United States has traditionally been the largest aid donor to the region. U.S. officials claim that aid to Somalia hasn't been stopped. However, the U.S. is investigating whether or not the aid that is being delivered is helping to fund the Al-Shabaab, an al Qaeda-linked terrorist group who is trying to overthrow the government. The United States admits that some parts of the country are receiving aid while others are not based on where the Al-Shabaab have control. The United Nations has estimated that nearly sixty percent of the Somalians that need aid are in regions controlled by the Al-Shabaab. According to a U.N. report, millions of Somalians will run out of food within the next few weeks. Nearly half of all Somalians are reliant on humanitarian aid, and nearly one in five children is acutely malnourished. The delay of U.S. aid is already affecting the humanitarian groups and programs through the United Nations. According to a U.S. official, the United States is working to find ways to deliver the goods to the Somalian people without having to pay the Al-Shabaab in the process.
