The first day of the United Nations month-long nuclear nonproliferation conference began with harsh words being exchanged between representatives from Iran and the United States. Iranian leader, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, took to the floor of the UN and gave a 35 minute speech criticizing the United States for such things as the US nuclear policy against Iran, the US nuclear arsenal, US support of Israel's nuclear program and even the past use of the atomic bomb in World War II. Diplomats from the US, UK, and France were even seen walking out of the hall when Ahmadinejad began his address. Secretary of State Clinton responded to these accusations by citing Iran as the "only country in this hall that has been found by the IAEA board of governors to be currently in noncompliance with its nuclear safeguards obligations." As this conference begins, the US is continuing to lead the effort in the UN Security Council to bring sanctions against Iran over their uranium enrichment.
