Broken Promises

The ambitious Millennium Development Goals (MDG) that were intended to lift millions out of poverty by the new millennium (target date 2015) are far from being met. This lack of progress that could potentially set the target date back a decade is in part due to the global recession. Donations in 2010 are estimated at $108bn a shortfall of $18bn against commitments made in 2005. Experts argue that the slow progress is not completely due to the fallen economy, but that these goals that ensure environmental stability are not being met because fundamental social change is required. The seven goals are as listed:
1)Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
2)Complete primary education for all by 2015
3)Eliminate gender inequality in schools by 2005 and in all education by 2015
4)To reduce by two-thirds the under-five mortality rate by 2015
5)To improve maternal heath
6)To have halted and begun to reverse the spread of disease by 2005
7)integrate sustainability into policies; reverse loss of resources; halve number of people with limited access to safe water by 2015; improve lives of 100 million slum dwellers by 2020
