After much preparation, a category one hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph passed over Bermuda Sunday night. As of Sunday morning it was 115 miles south-southwest of the British group of islands, though quickly traveling north. Thankfully for Bermudians, the hurricane was not as strong as it was earlier in the week. Public Safety Minister David Burch said, "This storm will be a long and punishing one." Waves grew higher not only in Bermuda but in the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico as well. Residents were urged to stock up on survival items and supplies used to secure their homes such as buckets, ropes, and bottled water. All flights departing from Bermuda and numerous hotel reservations were canceled. Igor has already caused most of Bermuda to lose power. Major damage has not yet been reported however experts say the worst is yet to come. Currently, flooded coastlines and fallen trees are the most severe forms of damage seen. Forecasters predict tropical storm force winds will remain in the area for roughly two days. Until then, people are taking shelter in schools, resorts, or their own boarded up homes waiting for the turbulent hurricane to pass.
