This New York Times article discusses the resolution behind a hotly contested border between Russia and Norway. This particular boundary is located in the Arctic Ocean and has been disputed since 1970. The agreement between the two countries will hopefully allow for more offshore oil drilling and production of gas. The treaty was signed on Wednesday and splits the geographic difference between the disputed area. The area, about 67,600 square miles, is of great importance because of the increased need for oil and surge in global warming. The Russian president is especially pleased with the resolve because it is an inspiration for other rival countries to settle their differences. Estimates state that there are 39 billion barrels of oil within the area. The treaty must be approved before it can become a law but the hope is that it will pass.
