Massive Demonstrations Break Out in Algeria

One of Algeria's biggest protests in decades occurred Friday in response to the current President of Algeria deciding to run for re-election despite his poor health. In 2013, President Abdelaziz Bouteflika suffered a stroke and has barely been seen in public since. This has caused unrest as it is assumed he is incapacitated, leaving the country in the hands of the military and elites. The ruling party has stuck with their claim that the election would be "free and transparent" but in the last few weeks, many journalists were arrested along with a partial shut down of internet services around the country.
