The United States has begun preparations
for consolidating the U.S. Consulate General with the U.S. Embassy. "This decision was driven by our global efforts to
increase the efficiency and effectiveness of our diplomatic engagements and
operations. It does not signal a change of U.S. policy on Jerusalem, the West
Bank, or the Gaza Strip” (Hansler, 2019). I immediately had a few questions.
What does this mean for the people of Jerusalem? Will combining these
facilities have a positive impact for the people? Or are we doing this for our
own benefit? Lastly, has it been done anywhere else? I pulled them up on Maps
and they’re apx 20 minutes from each other. The US President says that we aren’t
taking sides on boundaries, boarders, and final decisions but why did he
endorse Jerusalem as Israel’s capitol? These two sentences seem to contradict one
other. In a nutshell, the US says that it is committed to achieving peace
between Israel and Palestine and ‘creating a single diplomatic mission.’ Palestine
against the decision but the article doesn’t say why. My assumption is that this
will decrease the U.S. presence in the area. What does this mean in terms of
the tensions between Israel and Palestine?
