Thousands Protest Against Algerian President's Bid for Fifth Term

Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika who has served as Algeria's President since 1999 has announced that he will be running for reelection this year. This is against many protests against him staying in power. He has promised to call for elections to replace him within one year of his next presidency if he wins. On Friday thousands of Algerians participated in a "million man" march causing authorities to to fire tear gas and rubber bullets. This will certainly be Bouteflika's last election due to his passing of a constitutional referendum passed in 2008 to remove a two-term presidential limit, however it was reversed in 2016, which means if he wins this year he will have to leave office in 2024.
