South African Airways Pilot Resigns Over Fake License
By: Reagan Quynn
William Chandler has resigned after South African Airways discovered Chandler’s pilot license and paperwork were fake. Pilots are required to have an ATPL (airline transport pilot license), but Chandler only had a commercial pilot’s license. Investigators believe the documents were forged to give the appearance of having an ATPL. Chandler worked as a flight engineer prior to becoming a pilot. While he did not command any planes, he worked as a Senior First Officer which means he was a monitoring pilot, however sources do report Chandler was in command of at least one plane the experienced navigational issues. Chandler has resigned and a security officer with South African Airways has been suspended on the grounds of allegedly attempting to cover up the forgery.
