Angela Merkel Officially Leaves Office

After being in office for over 16 years, Angela Merkel has officially left office early this week. The Chancellor of Germany, or rather former Chancellor of Germany, passed the baton to her successor, Olaf Scholz, last Wednesday. Merkel started her historic time in office back near the end of 2005, marking her as Germany's first female chancellor. She has worked alongside countless of other world leaders including, "four U.S. presidents, four French presidents, five British prime ministers and eight Italian premiers". She has also guided Germany through multiple crises, such as Europe's debt crisis and (more recently) the coronavirus pandemic. She is adored by many, and is seen as one of the best world leaders of this century. What makes her dismissal from office even more evident of her popularity is that she chose to step down, unlike her predecessors. Angela Merkel has truly left a positive impact in both domestic and international politics for Germany and the world, and her name will forever be sealed in history.
