Yesterday, 12/4, Mt Semeru erupted in Java, Indonesia. Currently, there are 14 confirmed deaths with many people still missing. Most of the locals did not know there was a volcanic eruption happening because they mistook the beginning signs of hot mud for usual flooding. The hot mud alone contributed to a large number of injuries. Now that the immediate danger has passed, people are devasted by the damage left by the ash falling from the sky and the mud flowing through their villages. The cause of the eruption was not seismic activity as it normally is. It was caused by abnormally heavy rainfall damaging the volcanic crater and eroding part of it away without notice. There is concern that more events like this will occur as a result of climate change in the future.
