G-7 warns Moscow of ‘massive consequences’ if Russia invades Ukraine - The Washington Post
The G-7 organization warned Russia about drastic consequences if they attack Ukraine. The organization, which represents seven of the most industrialized democracies (US, France, Italy, Canada, Germany, UK, Japan), stated their opposition to Russia's buildup along the Ukrainian border. This is after American intelligence allegedly found a plan for a 175,000 strong invasion of Ukraine by Russian forces, which Moscow has denied. Western states are calling on Russia to deescalate the situation and to solve it diplomatically instead of with war. While most of these threats are economic, many could also lead to military conflict between the EU and Russia. The last real European war was in Yugoslavia almost 30 years ago, so we are due for a new one. Ukraine has been seen as NATO's gateway to Eastern Europe, and as such it makes Russia feel very vulnerable. This is why they support Russian separatists in the region and annexed Crimea in 2014. I would not be surprised if this leads to an invasion, since Russia needs a loyal Ukraine as a puppet state.
