Chinese military troops were seen marching toward the Twain Strait median line hours after President Tsai Ing-wen returned from a trip to the United States. The Taiwanese Defence Ministry said 71 Chinese military planes and nine ships were seen crossing the Taiwan Strait median line. This line is seen as an unofficial dividing line between China and Taiwan.
Taiwan considers itself a sovereign state, with its own constitution and leaders but China sees the island as a breakaway province that will eventually be brought under Beijing's control and by force if necessary. The military rehearses were a show of power by the Chinese to the Taiwanese.
