Macron sparks outrage by suggesting Europe take independent stance from U.S. on Taiwan

"The worst thing would be to think that we Europeans must become followers on this topic and adapt to the American rhythm or a Chinese overreaction,” the French president said.

French President stated that Europe has no interest in accelerating the conflict in Taiwan and that Europe should become a "Third Pole" that is independent of both Washington and Beijing. Political actors are criticizing the president's position on the conflict in Taiwan as being to the accommodation of China.

China views Taiwan as its own territory and stated that it has never renounced the use of force to bring Taiwan under its control, but Taiwan officials object to these claims made by China.

Norbert Roettgen, German MO for the Bundestags foreign committed stated that the French president was continuing to isolate himself from Europe with these claims and stated that President Macrons' trip to China was a "PR coup for XI, and a Foreign policy disaster for Europe".
