The death of Guinea's electoral commission head, Ben Sekou Sylla, coupled with weekend violence that reportedly killed at least one person, has caused the upcoming Guinean presidential election to be called into question by all parties. This article details the past week's happenings, and what they mean for the people of Guinea. The two major candidates, Cellou Dalein Diallo of the UFDG party and Alpha Conde of the RPG party, differ on postponing the election, with the UFDG party for postponing and the RPG party against it. There is also tension that the election could spark an outbreak of violence between the nations two largest ethnic groups, the Peuls and the Malinke, as the rival candidates are members of each. All in all, this adds up to being a very crucial time for stability in both Guinea and the entire West African region.
