China's Western region of Xinjiang has recently legalized the arrests of innocent Uighur civilians and the use of 'educational facilities.' Uighurs are Turkic Muslims who make up about 45% of the population within Xinjiang. Xinjiang explains that these facilities are vital to tackling extremism within the area through the means of 'ideological transformation.' However, many rights groups say that these facilities are used to scare innocent people into submission. These prisoners have to denounce their faith entirely and swear loyalty to the Chinese president Xi Jinping. Former prisoners explained that physical and psychological abuse occurred within these camps.
