Tuesday night, an important part of the Afghan-led peace process, Burhanuddin Rabbani, was assassinated. He was attempting to negotiate a compromise with the Taliban, but a suicide bomber got to him before he was able to seal the deal. The suicide bomber was brought into Rabbani's home by trusted emissary, and had explosives tucked into his turban. The bomber was sent as a messenger who claimed to have valuable information for Rabbani, and was not searched to show a sign of trust,. However, this came to be a huge mistake. Burhanuddin Rabbani was the leader of the High Peace Council, and also a former president of Afghanistan. He has been working on reaching out to the Taliban and settling the bad blood. His death was a shock to much of Afghanistan, including the President, who cut his trip to the United Nations General Assembly short once he had heard the news. The killing of Rabbani was the third time in three months that a highly ranked official was assassinated in an assumed secure place.
