Palestine Sets Date for UN Bid
According to the BBC World News, the Palestinian Authorities, led by Mahmoud Abbas, will submit a application to the United Nations on September 23rd, eight days from now. The news comes as talks between the Palestinian authorities and the Israeli government have been inconclusive. Already, the United States has suggested it would veto its membership in the Security Council, but is also in the process of talking to Palestinian authorities through both its diplomats as well as British ones, such as Middle East Envoy Tony Blair. Also, the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will be speaking on the issue September 21st, two days before the application for membership will be submitted. Already, analysts suggest that Palestine will be granted a non-member state status, as the United States will veto full membership. There are fears in Israel that they and the United States will be left on the sidelines, as many nations in the UN are believed to be supporting Palestinian membership. This hot topic issue will be of much interest in the coming days, as both parties will attempt to seek out their best interests.
