Libyan Forces Facing Increased Resistance

Even with Moammar Gadhafi out of power and on the run, tensions and violence remain high in some critical Libyan regions as the National Transitional Council, the initial successor to the Gadhafi regime, tries to take control of the embattled African state. The city of Sirte, the birthplace and home of Gadhafi’s tribe, has been an especially tough roadblock for the NTC to topple. After killing 8 anti-Gadhaffi fighters and wounding 31 more, the rebel groups defending their once proud leader showed that the transitional process might take longer than the Transitional Council hoped.

Bani Walid and Sabha are two other remaining havens of the pro-Gadhafi camp where peaceful succumbing to the NTC is proving unrealistic. But although they might be facing obstacles in these locations, the NTC seems to be gaining a majority of support throughout other regions of the country. Of equal importance is the fact that they also recently gained some more critical support from the UN, when a resolution was put in place to implement a support mission in Libya that will assist the country and the new government. But before the elections of the government, revitalization of the economy, and the rebirth of the nation can take place, the resistance being shown at Gadhafi’s last few strongholds must be addressed, and resolved.
