Yemem unrest: Security forces open fire on protesters

Security forces opened fire on hundreds of protesters, killing 26 and injuring hundreds, after they left encampment in Sanaa headed towards the presidential palace. The protesters marched toward the presidential palace calling for President Ali Abdullah to step down from his position.

It was reported that the protest turned violent after protesters began to throw petrol bombs at the security forces. Witnesses said security forces opened fire soon after using automatic weapons, anti-aircraft guns, tear gas, and water cannons. Violence soon escalated into running street battles shortly after.

These protests show the extreme increase in violence towards protesters calling for President Saleh to step down. Currently he is recovering from wounds left by an attack on him in June.
