Computer creates cyborg yeast genes

Most of what pops into our minds when we think of cyborgs and cyberpunk has to do with sci-fi works: Blade Runner, Ghost in the Shell, Star Trek, Bubblegum Crisis, and so on. And yet here we have an experiment that has successfully written genetic code utilizing mechanical means. We're nowhere close to fully functioning artificial limbs that feel pain or prosthetic bodies, mind you, but this is still a big step in technological advances that might be another alternative to more destructive means in the running question of "how do we continue to survive?" It is quite possible that this could be used to create immunizations by influencing cells during early embryonic development, or perhaps presenting a safer alternative to genetically altered food by altering the genes during development rather than using chemistry (something that Monsanto would be quite displeased to hear of but equally powerless to stop).
However, none of those things are anywhere close to happening yet. There is much work to be done and many studies that must take place if such an experiment is expected to yield anything of note. It still presents something much more opportune to spend money on than trying to figure out how to electrify cars while still keeping the gas element in them.
