Iraqi Bombings

On Wednesday morning, the northern city of Kirkuk in northern Iraq experienced two car bombings near government buildings. These bombings killed a total of ten people. Later in the day, several more car bombings occurred in Shiite neighborhoods throughout Baghdad. In Baghdad, 22 people were killed and dozens more were injured. In addition to this damage, there was significant damage to surrounding houses as well as vehicles. The attacks seemed to target police officers, two of which were killed in separate incidents. One officer was killed by a suicide bomber on a motorcycle in northern Baghdad; the other officer was killed by a roadside bomb in the city of Mosul. These attacks are believed to have been carried out by Sunni Islamist insurgents who aim to set off sectarian confrontations.
