Nigeria sent a massive deployment of men and resources to fight against Islamists
militants in three northern-eastern states. The reason for sending men was to
assert the nation “territorial integrity” and to enhance their security. After
a series of deadly militant attacks, the President declared a state of
emergency in certain states. A group named Boko Haram has been blamed for most
of the violence. They usually attack in
the north-east of Nigeria, and it has been said that roughly 2000 people have
died since 2010. Most of the violence has
remained in the north east over the last three years, however the group did
bomb Nigeria’s capital, Abuja in 2011 and 2012. It is believed that the group
has close links with al-Qaeda militants, and access to increasingly sophisticated
weaponry. The Boko Haram group is believed to cross back and forth the Cameroon
and Nigerian boarder. There are more than 160 million people in Nigeria who are
also affected by other conflicts such as land, religion and oil.
