The EU votes in favor of controversial migrant quotas

Jonathan Eden

The European Union has voted in favor of migrant quotas proposed by Germany as a way of spreading out Syrian refugees coming to Europe in order to prevent countries such as Germany being overwhelmed by the huge numbers of refugees moving through Europe. The plan will see 120.000 migrants moved from Italy, Greece and Hungary to other EU countries, with Germany, France and Spain taking the majority of them. Some countries such as Romania, the Czech Republic and Hungary voted against this plan. This could potentially have significant implications for the European Union as a whole, countries like the UK in particular have had a shaky relationship with the EU in recent years with the rise of the UK independence party, the current quotas could be used a potential ammunition against both the EU and Conservative party for allowing European countries to make British policies, it may be because of this that Britain has the option to choose whether to take part in the quota scheme or not. Other countries such as Slovakia's prime minister has said he will not accept the new quotas. This leads some to question what will happen to the migrants who attempt to enter Slovakia and how other European nations will respond, as well as encouraging more migrants to make the journey into Europe from Syria.
