Ewing wrote an article today “ Volkswagen Says 11 Million Cars Worldwide Are
Affected in Diesel Deception” to highlight Volkswagen’s recent software
emission manipulation scandal. This article states that the manufacturer placed software in
eleven million cars that could effectively trick standard gas emission tests. Ewing wrote, “Volkswagen’s embattled chief
executive, Martin Winterkorn, released a video
statement in
which he said the company would work with government authorities to investigate
the matter. “Everything will be laid on the table, as quickly, thoroughly and
transparently as possible,’’ Mr. Winterkorn said. “And, to be clear,
manipulation and Volkswagen — this must never happen again.’’
Volkswagen not only damaged the environment,
shareholders and clients with its software manipulation, but more importantly,
it also substantially damaged its brand because it will be a challenge for the
company to regain the trust of its consumers.
Moreover, Volkswagen forgot the principle of reciprocity, as I am fairly
certain that countries throughout the world will punish the company’s dishonest
actions. Although Volkswagen will pay
millions of dollars in fines to resolve the issue, Volkswagen has levied a
substantial penalty on the world’s environment as a result of its intentional
deception in the name of greater profits. This incident has opened up an
intense examination of whether other automobile companies are engaging in the
same type of malfeasance. As a result, governments around the world must create
specialized emission tests not subject to software manipulation because they
can no longer trust automobiles companies to comply with environment laws
without close monitoring.
