Tony Abbott, Prime Minister of Australia, loses leadership fight

This past Monday, Australia held an election for a new Prime Minister. The result of this sudden election saw Malcom Turnbull beat Tony Abbott 54-44. This election was caused by Abbott's lack of effective government spending, which was a main focal point of his campaign. Along with wanting to make the economy more stable, Abbott has had a strong viewpoint on closing Australia's borders to illegal immigrants. Turning back these boats has caused numerous lives to be lost at sea, and portrayed Abbott in a negative light. This has also open Australia to international criticism of breaking human rights.

Abbott has also received criticism for his trade agreement with their largest trade partner, China. In recent years, China's large demand for mineral imports from Australia has helped the economy grow, there is too much emphasis placed on one country. With China's demand dropping in recent years, Australia has seen a drop in GDP. These kinds of declines has led Abbott's criticizers to state, "Australia does not need another out of touch, arrogant, Liberal leader. Australia needs a change of government."
